Brief History of Isom Place Oxford
Walking through the carved wooden front doors at Isom Place feels like stepping back into times past. The Isom Place (circa 1835-1836) dates back to the Civil War, and its foundation initially supported a three room log cabin. Between 1840 and 1862, the original two story home was erected. The home’s occupants played an important role in Oxford’s history, and Dr. Thomas Isom was Oxford’s first settler and the one who named the town. Scholars suggest that the walls of the current dining room witnessed the signing of the University of Mississippi Charter. Interestingly, Dr. Isom would later bear the honor of watching his daughter Sarah McGehee Isom become the first woman faculty member of the University of Mississippi, living in the home where the university’s beginnings originated until her death in 1905. Oxford native William Faulkner, regarded as one of the greatest American writers of all time, visited Isom Place often, and the home inspired the fictional setting for his short story, “A Rose for Emily.” In the year 2000, the home returned to its roots and was donated to the University of Mississippi, where it housed the Barksdale Reading Institute for several years. Officially opened as an event venue in April 2021, Isom Place continues to beckon visitors to enter its doors and write their own chapter of history.
