Brief History of The Lyric
If you stroll the side streets of the Oxford Square you can’t help but notice the timeless elegance of the Lyric. Originally constructed in the late 1800s, the structure was acquired by William Faulkner’s family in the early 1900s and utilized as a livery stable. During the Roaring ‘20s, it was transformed into a theater for live performances and silent films and was named The Lyric Theatre. The arrival of motion pictures saw The Lyric eventually become Oxford’s first movie theater and featured the world premiere of Intruder in the Dust in 1949, adapted from one of William Faulner’s novels. Faulkner attended the premier and walked from Rowan Oak, his Oxford home, to his former childhood stable to see the show. The Lyric ceased functioning as a movie theater in the 1970’s and lay abandoned for many years. The Lyric was beautifully restored in 2007 and returned to its former glory as a theater on July 3rd, 2008.
